London XXVI. British newspapers

In my first weeks in London I did not buy newspapers. I took the free delivering ones or I had one of the school. But the truth is that free newspapers are only rubbish and the paper that could get in the School was usually The Daily Telegraph, which is not the worst, but it is quite sensationalist. So a while ago I started to buy. I've been alternating between The Guardian and The Independent (read the Indepéndent, because you can not be understood at the kiosk). After a few weeks reading serious British press I have a first conclusion. These newspapers are more interesting than the Spanish ones. No day I get to finish to read all the information and ideas that interest me. It is true that it takes a long time to read, but that does not invalidate what I said. There are several things in the paper that I am interested every day.

The Independent said in an editorial today the draft of the coalition government to privatize prisons. It ends with a phrase which I am not reluctant to share with you. This phrase condenses in so few words a declaration of principles about the public sector, which is like saying society and state, with which I agree at all, since saying all my life is probably an exaggeration, but a long time.

"If commerce has something to teach in the matter of running prisons - which is not yet self-evident - the public sector should not be replace, but required to learn."

On the other hand, the columnist Christina Patterson says very positively the attitude of British composer Andrew Lloyd Weber after his prostate surgery. The artist has stated publicly that the operation has left him unable to have "penetrative sex" (a charitable euphemism to avoid the word impotent). Sex therapists advised him to take Viagra or to use a special pump but he decided to admit defeat: "I am a ladies' man who can never make love. I am resigned to that", he said. Esta frase condensa en pocas palabras una declaración de principios sobre el sector público, que es como decir la sociedad y el Estado, con la que estoy de acuerdo en todo desde hace mucho tiempo (decir toda mi vida es probablemente una exageración).
